Halogen Light Bulbs

Halogen light bulbs that produce light in a similar method to a regular incandescent bulb. A halogen bulb has a filament made of Tungsten, which glows when electricity is applied, halogen light bulbs - assorted styles same as a regular incandescent bulb. What makes a halogen bulb different is that it is filled with halogen gas instead of argon gas like a regular bulb is. The halogen gas removes the carbon deposits on the inside of the bulb, caused by the burning of the tungsten filament, and re-deposits it back on to the filament, resulting in a light bulb which can be burned at a higher temperature therefore creating, both a whiter as well as a brighter light per watt than a regular bulb. The average rated life of halogen bulbs are typically between 2,000 and 4,000 hours.

They come in many shapes and sizes, some directional others not, some quite small others the size of regular bulbs, some fit into normal sockets other require special sockets and voltages to work. Possible uses may include jobs where color is important because of it's excellent color rendering of its whiter light, or it's physically smaller size has lead to a lot of unique of designs of lamps and fixtures that would not have been possible with the size of regular bulbs. The smaller size of the bulb has also lead to better designs of reflectors, increasing the efficiency of halogen light bulbs as a directional light source for track lighting.

The shapes and sizes of halogen bulbs not found on your typical incandescent light bulb include:

  • Double-Ended Tubular Halogen Bulb has a RSC base, a T3 shape and diameter, and they are available in 2 lengths; the short - 79mm (3 1/8") and the long - 119mm (4 11/16"). Wattages available on the 79mm model vary from 75 - 250 watt, and on the 119mm model they vary from 75 - 500 watt.
  • 12 volt Bi-Pin Halogen Peanut Bulb in the 5, 10 or 20 watt T3 size have the G4 base where as the 35, 50, 75, 100 watt T4 size have the GY6.35 base.
  • 120 volt Halogen Peanut Bulb comes in 35, 50, 75, or 100 watt with a GY6.35 base as well as 25, or 35 watt with a G9 base. The 120 volt G9 Halogen Peanut Bulb has the distinction of containing a lower pressure halogen gas making it safe for use in new unshielded light fixtures, this has the promise of smaller more streamline fixture designs to come.
  • T4 Single-Ended Halogen Bulb comes in wattages from 75 - 250 watt with either an E11 base or a BA15D base.
  • 12 volt MR11 Halogen Bulb comes in 10, 20, or 35 watt sizes, they have a GY4 base, and are available with or without a glass cover. It is also available with a BA15D base.
  • 12 volt MR16 Halogen Bulb comes in 20, 35, 42, or 50 watt sizes, they have a GY5.3 base, and are available with or without a glass cover.
  • 120 volt MR16 Halogen Bulb is available in 35, or 50 watt with a GY5.3 base, or as a JDR/MR16 halogen bulb with either a E26 base or with a GU10 base.
  • Halogen PAR 20 Bulb comes in either 35, or 50 watt, Flood or Spot.
  • Halogen PAR 30 Bulb comes in either 50, or 75 watt, Flood or Spot, with a short neck or a long neck.
  • Halogen PAR 38 Bulb comes in either 45, 60 or 90 watt, Flood or Spot.
Halogen bulbs are also commonly identified by their ANSI code.
